More Beneath the Surface

I thought I would share a couple more photos with you guys. The first one is called "Broadway Blur". I only had a second to take this shot before the doors on the F train closed and continued towards Brooklyn. The other is titled "Platform". I sometimes take the Q train from Times Square and at the head of the platform there is a section where tar spilled and it created such a cool pattern. I look at it everytime I am there.

If you are looking at these photos and you enjoy them please give me a shout out. I would love to hear from you.

NY is a funny place

I received a comment from a guy named Craig in Boston today. He found my blog by coming across a picture that a woman took of me several weeks back. I was writing info about my gallery event and this blog address on the sidewalk w/ chalk in Dumbo. I actually had a brief conversation with her but, I had no idea that she took my picture as well as a photo of my writing. Even though the rain washed away my sidewalk sign within a few hours, i am sure that quite a few folks saw it and now people like Craig also are still seeing it through the photos on flickr. How crazy is that? Life is funny. I just want my work to be seen and the Universe seems to be helping me. I am grateful.

Gentle Realities

Hello friends. Just look at this little one. He is such a cutie! I call this one "Little Man". There is something about this child that seems beyond his time. His eyes and if you were there with me, his disposition gave me a sense that he has an old soul. Anyway, children make me smile. They remind me of the important things in life such as, try to love with an open heart, live in the moment, trust, laugh until you cry and cry until you laugh.

I'm one week away from my gallery event @ No Name Cyber Cafe in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The date is August 21st. The time will be 7-10pm. I hope that all of you can make it. Scroll down this page for more info. See you there!

Harsh Realities

Life can be tough in this city. I am often amazed by the number of homeless people there are here. I am also aware of how desensitized we New Yorkers are at times. Everywhere you turn there is someone asking for money, in desperate need of help. It can be overwhelming. I am fascinated by these people. Who are they? Where did they come from? What happened to them? How did they sink so low? My heart goes out to them and I try to help whenever I can. I call this photo "Pick" since that is exactly what she was doing and in many places. The harsh realities of life. To meet more of these people, please come to my photo essay gallery event on the 21st in Williamsburg. Scroll down this page for more info and photos. Enjoy.

Here is one of my favorites.......

Hi folks. I call this one "Chocolate Squish". I ran into these guys on the F train on my way home months back. They were having fun squishing their friend in the middle. This went on for several minutes, then they would take a break and surprise him again. They were totally into me taking their picture. I love that the guy on the end is holding a book about chocolate. So sweet. Enjoy and don't forget to come out on August 21st to my cafe/gallery event in Williamsburg. It will be a blast!

More From Subway Study......

I hope that all of you are enjoying my photos. These two are called "Love and Support" and "Sunflower: Underground Sunshine"
I am often struck by the beauty in how we all relate to one another. A simple glance or loving touch says and does so much. I am grateful to have witnessed that moment between those two people. :-)

Who is Steven Evan?

My name is Steven Evan and I am a New Yorker. I say that with great pride because this is an amazing city and I love it. There are also many moments when I don't enjoy living here. Those moments when I am overwhelmed by the crowds, foul odors, high cost of living etc. For every negative there is a positive. Diversity, culture, a rhythmic pulse to name a few. At the end of the day New York has my heart.

I am a creature of habit. I wake up every morning, feed my cat, putz around the apartment, run errands through out town, go to work, socialize a bit and then back on the train to Brooklyn. I generally ride the same trains daily. Through all of this, my senses take in everything.

Many things intrigue me about NYC and its inhabitants. I look at people around me and I always wonder who they are. Where did they come from? Where are they going? We all have stories. We all move through pain and joy. We all experience success and failure in varying degrees.

I also find myself observing relationships. Witnessing love between friends, lovers, parents and children. Beauty. I search for beauty in this concrete jungle.

A little over a year ago I bought a Nokia camera-phone and it quickly became a way for me to record part of my journey. Some moments are meant to happen and then live on in our minds. While others are destined to be captured and shared. These are those moments. Enjoy.
